The Spring Lookbook

The Church of Ian Felice

Hillsdale, NY is down the road from Hudson, NY, which is a couple of hours away from New York City, but it feels like a long way from anything. A few lonely clapboard houses, a general store, meadows, forests and streams, the Catskills somewhere off to the west. Farm Country; frost still flanking the roadside after a late season weather front.

Patrick Radden Keefe Knows Where to Dig

“I know I’m onto a good story when I’m talking to someone, and I find myself leaning in to catch everything that they’re saying,” says Patrick Radden Keefe, leaning in a bit for dramatic effect. “The fact that I can feel my own pulse quickening. That’s the best proxy I can come up with for when something grabs me.”

“I feel like at its best, a good story is when you want to bottle your own excitement and serve it up to the reader.”

Drake’s in Brittany

Dinard looks a bit like Margate… if Margate was really nice (sorry Margate, we still love you). From the garden of our little house, shaded by apple trees, you can see all the way down to Plage de l’Écluse, a gentle curve of white(ish) sand and teal blue water, choppy at the start of spring, framed by gothic houses and Le Grand Hôtel Dinard, impressive and slightly battered by time and the salt air that whips off the English Channel.
