Mist Opportunity

Ah! Fans! Portable ones at that! And they spray mist! So refreshing!

Also, so simple. So let’s talk about something else. Like baseball.

If you follow professional baseball, and maybe even if you don’t, you know that last year, the MLB implemented some rule changes to deal with the issues of stagnant offenses and way-too-long games. The solution? Make the bags fractionally larger, implement a pitch clock, outlaw the shift, limit pick-off attempts, etc.

And it worked last season. Perfectly. Moreover, it continues to work this season, which is probably even more impressive, because oftentimes, it’s the years following a major change that show whether or not said change really has staying power. Or, to put it differently: when the media buzz and back-patting die down, and ‘the new-and-improved game’ ceases to be new-and-improved and just becomes ‘the game,’ do the powers-that-be continue to enforce the rules or do they relax their grip and allow things to backslide? So far, so good, MLB!

Oh, but just to be clear, if you haven’t been watching baseball these past two seasons, don’t be fooled. This isn’t some unrecognizable new sport, packed with gimmicky action. That’s the beauty of it all. The bases-loaded, full-count pitch is still as tense. The banter between the broadcasters is just as loose as ever. Baseball’s mostly chill soul remains unblemished. It’s just that, when you look down at the score bug at the bottom of your screen, you’re more likely to be surprised that it’s already the top of the seventh rather than, as was the case in the past, dismayed to learn you haven’t even made it to the bottom of the fourth.

Hence the changes’ near universal approval ratings.

The only problem is, while it’s an improvement that a tight pitchers’ duel lasts an anxiety-filled hour forty-five rather than a miserable three and a half, that much time outside in the hot sun is still gonna get pretty uncomfortable.

Which is why, if you plan to go to a baseball game this summer–or spend any time outside, really–maybe consider buying these fans.

They’re portable! And they spray mist!
